Don’t Panic: Mercury Retrograde is Here. Here’s What You Need To Know

If you’ve spent any time online, you’ve probably seen a lot of panic about Mercury Retrograde (usually in cute, easily shareable infographic form on Instagram). People make a lot of fuss about all the chaos this planetary event will cause for your social life, but don’t panic: it’s actually not that big a deal. At least, not if you’re well informed. Luckily, your big sisters at FEMME MAG have got you covered with everything you need to survive this turbulent time. But first…

Mercury In Retrograde: What Does That Even Mean?

In scientific terms, Mercury Retrograde is basically an optical illusion. Three or four times a year, the planet Mercury appears to move in the opposite direction to earth. In Astrology, the retrograde period is associated with delay and confusion. And since Mercury is the messenger planet, you may notice some chaos in your ability to communicate. Think laptops crashing, flights being delayed or people from your past popping up to say hello. This year, Mercury goes retrograde from May 29th to June 22nd in the sign of Gemini: the sign of flexibility and fast-paced thinking.

Well, What Do I Do?

Ride it out! We tend to focus on the negative parts of this period, but there are lessons to learn from every set back. Your ex sliding in your DMs out of nowhere is stressful, but this is a good time to reflect on how far you’ve come, and figure out what (or who!) you no longer need in your life. This is also the perfect time to slow down a little bit, and give yourself a little extra time to do what you need to do: if you’re taking any trips, maybe plan to get to the airport a little earlier. Double check your emails and texts to avoid miscommunication, and think before you speak! A little extra caution never hurt anybody, after all.
