FEMME MAG Summer Reading List Ep 1. Ft. Chinelo Ikem

Whether you’re in the mood to read on a beach or curl up indoors, there’s a book out there to match every mood. Problem is: which book to sink your teeth into? While we’d admit that these are good problems, selecting a book (or books. Why stop at one?), can feel like a herculean task. Is it going to be a gripping thriller or a steamy romance page-turner? We understand and we’re here for you.

To make your selection a bit easier, we’ve caught up with some members of our FEMME MAG community and asked them what they plan on reading this Summer and why. We’ll be reporting back with their responses throughout the Summer! From celebrity memoirs, to teen dramas, we’ve got a range of stuff coming your way. Think of it as our little gift to you!  To kick off this stellar series, we have Chinelo Ikem (@interestedinblackbooks).

Aftershocks: A Memoir. Nadia Owusu.

I selected this book because I’m trying to push myself to read more non-celebrity memoirs. When I read non-fiction, I usually read books about a specific topic such as reproductive justice. Rarely do I pick up a non-fiction book that focuses on a person’s life story. Nadia Owusu’s memoir details the inner secrets of her family story.

“Aftershocks” by Nadia Owusu

As the daughter of a Ghanaian dad who worked as a United Nations official and an Armenian mom, Nadia traveled and lived in several countries in Europe and Africa including Italy, Tanzania, and of course, Ghana. She talks a lot about belonging, her father’s passing, and her eventual move to New York. I’ve been eyeing this book for months and hopefully, I have the time to read it this summer.
